카펜터스의 카렌(Karen)은 1950년, 오빠 리처드(Richard)는 1946년생이다. 카펜터스의 첫번째 빌보드 핫100 차트 1위곡은 1970년에 발표한 (They Long To Be) Close To You <1970. 7. 25 ~ 8. 15>이고 이곡 Top Of The World는 두번째 1위곡이다. <1973년 12월 1일자 부터 12월 8일자까지 2주간 1위>
1975년 1월 25일 ,Please Mr. Postman이 다시 1위에 올라 카펜터스는 총 3곡이 핫100 차트 정상을 차지했고. 이지 리스닝계의 Adult Contemporary 장르에서는 총 15곡이 1위를 차지했다.
소프트 락의 새로운 지평을 연 카펜터스는 카렌이 1983년 32세의 나이에 거식증으로 요절하면서 자동적으로 활동이 끝났지만 천상의 목소리라 불리는 카렌의 아름다운 목소리는 영원히 우리 곁에 남아 있다. 카렌은 드러머로서도 뛰어난 자질을 보여 많은 사랑을 받았다.
Top of the world는 당초 앨범으로만 발매되었지만 1973년 린 앤더슨이 불러 컨트리 부문 차트 2위에까지 오른 데 자극받아 카펜터스가 싱글로 발매, 공전의 히트를 기록하게 되었다고. 린 앤더슨의 곡도 하와이언 기타 반주와 어울려 훌륭한 사운드를 내고 있다.
